Importing Webinar Chat Logs
Import actual chat logs from Zoom, eWebinar, or other platforms to replay real conversations verbatim.
What Are Chat Log Imports?
Chat log imports let you load actual historical chat messages from a live webinar or meeting into FomoChat. Instead of AI-generating a conversation, the messages are imported exactly as they occurred.
This is ideal when you:
- Recorded a live webinar and want to replay the authentic chat experience
- Have engaging Q&A from a past event you want to recreate
- Want visitors to see real questions and answers from actual attendees
π‘ Tip: This is different from video transcripts (the spoken words). Chat logs are the written messages participants typed during the event.
How Chat Log Imports Work
- Export your chat log from Zoom, eWebinar, or another platform
- Upload the file in the Participants step of the FomoChat editor
- Participants are automatically created from the chat participants
- Messages are imported verbatim with their original timing
- An AI Rep is auto-added if no company representative exists (to answer new visitor questions)
Exporting Chat Logs
From Zoom
- After your meeting ends, go to the Zoom desktop app
- Navigate to Meetings β Recorded
- Find your meeting and locate the chat.txt file
- Open and copy the contents, or upload the file directly
Zoom chat format example:
10:15:23 From John Smith to Everyone:
Great presentation so far!
10:15:45 From Jane Doe to Everyone:
I have a question about pricing
From eWebinar
- Go to your eWebinar dashboard
- Open the webinar you want to export
- Navigate to Interactions β Chat
- Click the Export button to download chat logs
- Copy the contents of the exported file
From Other Platforms
Most webinar platforms allow chat exports. Look for:
- Export Chat or Download Chat Log options
- Check the Analytics or Reports section
- Post-event email with recording and chat attachments
Uploading to FomoChat
- Open your FomoChat in edit mode
- Select "Chat during a video" as the widget purpose
- Choose "Load existing chat" as your participant source
- Drag and drop your chat file, or click to upload
- Review the imported participants and messages
- Adjust timing if needed to sync with your video
What Gets Imported
| Element | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Participant names | Created as actors in the conversation |
| Message text | Imported exactly as written |
| Timestamps | Converted to video-relative timing (MM:SS) |
| Private messages | Excluded (only public chat) |
AI Rep Auto-Addition
When you import a chat log, FomoChat checks if there's a company representative. If not, an AI Rep is automatically added with:
- Default name that you can customize
- Role: AI-powered responder (Staff Bot)
- Purpose: Answer new visitor questions during playback
You can customize or remove this rep in the Participants step.
π‘ Key Insight: The AI Rep is essential for video modeβit stays after the video ends to answer follow-up questions from engaged viewers.
Imported vs. Generated Participants
After import, participants are distinguished by badges:
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Loaded | Imported from chat log |
| Staff | Company representative (added by system) |
| Customer / Prospect | Manually added or AI-generated |
